My First Blog

Greetings,

My name is Angelina Kimoktoak. I am from a village in the Southwest of Alaska called Kwigillingok (Kuigilnguq, which translates to "the village of no river"). I am in my third year at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, currently doing General Studies.

I think art is a way to express emotions and feelings in ways that words cannot. I also think that art is used to show skill and creativity. Thinking about art, really makes me question how it came to be. I feel like art has a lot more to it than most people know. I occasionally practice doing art. Sometimes I like painting or drawing, but those things take a lot of patience for me. I also enjoy beading jewelry, but it is hard for me to take the time to do so. I enjoy seeing Alaskan Native art because I know it is hard work. It amazes me how some things can be turned into beautiful pieces of art.

This piece of art was gifted to me by family. It is made of grass and dyed seal gut. The smell of it reminds me of Spring time in Kwigillingok.

  2. I know what you mean about the smell. My mother has several grass baskets and I loved to smell them as a kid. I used to do beading too, but time..... where did it go?

  3. I completely agree with you when you said art takes patience. I used to draw and paint a lot when I was a kid. Now that I am an adult and I have more responsibility, I feel like the patience that I had as a kid is out the window. I used to spend hours and hours drawing and painting. Now I can barely focus for just an hour to paint a small pumpkin for Halloween :/.

  4. I'm not a very patient person, yet I'm an art major so I understand your dislike for how long art takes. It's amazing to see people put so much time and care into their art like whoever created that grass basket for you.
